WHAT IS A WOMB STEAM?
A Womb Steam (Vaginal Steaming) is the process of adding specific herbs to boiling water and then positioning the pelvic area over the therapeutic steam and the soothing oils being released. Once safely seated directly above the boiling herbs, the oil particles in the steam can be absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the vulva and surrounding tissues. This relaxing process is beneficial whether or not you possess a uterus, and can be used along with other self-care rituals like meditation, yoga, and journaling.
Womb Steaming has been around across cultures for centuries. More recently, this age-old practice has been shown to greatly support feminine health and provide holistic management for a wide variety of feminine imbalances.

HOW DO I STEAM?
It is extremely important to womb steam correctly to avoid any burning or irritation, so please be advised to only consult a certified Peri-Steam Hydrotherapist.
To properly steam you must:
- Boil purified water and add a moderate amount of the herbal blend. Cover, and allow the blend to simmer and then steep.
- Transfer to a non-plastic bowl or crock pot and let cool. Place under steam stool, and test steam temperature with hand.
- Sit/kneel above bowl. Wrap a blanket around your waist to contain the warm vapours.

WHEN IS STEAMING NOT RECOMMENDED?
Steaming is not recommended if you are:
- Pregnant (under 37 weeks)
- Ovulating (if you are trying to conceive)

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I STEAM?
There isn't an exact answer. Steaming regularity depends on your specific situation and will also change as your target issues are resolved.
As a general self-care regime, we recommend that women steam 2-3 times per month (always during the weeks when they aren't menstruating).

Traditionally, Womb Steaming is widely known for helping women heal after childbirth. However, depending on the type of delivery and the postpartum conditions, everyone's individual protocol may vary.

CAN I STEAM IF I HAVE AN IUD?
Because an IUD is an intrauterine device, there is always a chance that the IUD could shift or dislodge. While women have reported good results after steaming with a copper/metal IUD, we do not recommend steaming with plastic IUDs.
Since some have found Womb Steaming to be very helpful for issues present with IUD use, should you decide to try steaming with an IUD, we would advise short, carefully monitored steaming sessions.
At Her Village we ALWAYS recommend that individuals be mindful of their own bodies and symptoms, so we recommend doing further investigation on your own to decide what makes you comfortable.
**If your IUD is in place as an attempt to alleviate menstrual symptoms, note that steaming alone can resolve these issues and eliminate the need for an IUD.
CAN STEAMING HELP WITH CRAMPS?
Yes! Cramping happens when the muscles in your uterus contract in order to help with an incomplete shedding of the uterine lining.
